The benefits of electric ball valves

The benefits of electric ball valves

An electric ball valve is a ball valve that you can operate electrically. The operation is the same as that of a manual ball valve. You use these ball valves to electrically control the flows of liquids or gases using an electric motor.

Electric ball valves are very robust and energy efficient, this is because they only consume power during switching. The electric motor is located in a housing on the valve. This is called the actuator and is connected to the ball valve via a top flange. The electric motor has a high torque and rotates the ball through the delayed transmission.

Different types of electric ball valves

As with conventional ball valves, there are 2-way and 3-way electric ball valves. The 2-way ball valve opens the valve when the bore in the ball is in line with the pipe. When you put the bore at right angles to the pipe, you interrupt the current.

The 3-way ball valve is in an L-bore and a T-bore and can therefore be switched in different ways. You use these ball valves in pump systems in which the volume flow is constant. You use this, for example, to mix or divert liquids.

The flange with which the actuator is connected to the ball valve can also be standardized according to ISO 5211. The ISO standard allows you to combine different brands of ball valves and actuators.

The advantage of an electric ball valve is that they are very robust and energy efficient. This is because you only use power during switching. Electric ball valves are usually used in various heating systems such as zone valves.

Connecting an electric ball valve

Different circuit diagrams are possible to control the ball valve. With an open and close circuit you can use a 2-point control, and a 3-point control uses 2 control signals, for open and close. It depends on what you are going to use the tap for which circuit is better.

There are also electric ball valves in special designs for special applications. For example, you have modulating ball valves with an input of 4 to 20 mA or with a 0 to 10V analog input. In addition, you have ball valves with fail-safe actuators. With these ball valves, when the power fails, the valve automatically returns to the rest position. This does require an energy source in the form of a battery, capacitor or mechanical spring.
